Three Animal Advocacy Shining Stars

Guest post by Carol Bryant

Can it really be October? In honor of “World Animal Day
(10/4),” “National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month,” and “National Cat Day (10/26),”
it is an honor to showcase three shining animal advocacy stars here on My
Diva’s Dish.

Peruvian Warrior

Imagine having a
job, security and everything planned and then you give that up to devote
yourself to a cause that calls to you. Molly Mednikow is the Founder and
Executive Director of Amazon CARES, which stands
for Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety.  They are the
only animal welfare organization for domestic animals in the Amazon region and
started in 2004.

Mollym_3 (2)In a precedent setting case, Amazon Cares brought their
first animal abuse case
to trial. Recently, the judge handed down a harsh sentence in the case, a true
victory for Amazon CARES and the pro-bono attorneys of the Bar Association. Sandra
Milagros Padilla Alvis, never imagined that an attempt on the life of Arthas, a
puppy of 5 months, owned by Alfredo Martín Díaz García, would result in being
charged for a crime.  In the 3rd Counsel Magistrates Court she was
sentenced for offenses against morality under an Animal Abuse and Cruelty Code.

Dog Food
Heroes

Pet pantries are emerging in parts of the country to help feed family pets
in need. Sara Henderson and Susan Holler applied a similar concept to
shelters.  Sara knew she wanted to make the world a better place for
animals -– she put that phrase on a "vision board" in 2008 –- and she
started the process in 2009 when she founded the Pet Project Midwest. Her
concept: Buy a bag of dog food, and her group will give a bag to a shelter pet
in the same area where the food was bought.

The two founded BOGO Bowl, which launched in June of 2012. For every bag of BOGO Bowl dog food
Bogodog (2) purchased, they ship the
equivalent of the same food to a nonprofit shelter of the buyer's
choice. BOGO Bowl received a 4-star rating from Pet Food Advisor. Bonus
points because protein is the first ingredient and their formulas include
fruits and vegetables. They don’t use byproducts and there are no artificial
colors or flavors. Triple bonus.

Fabulous Feline Mom

Mollylooks (2)Last
but not least, Yvonne DiVita is the co-founder of BlogPaws as well as
being a lifelong pet lover. Yvonne and her family recently adopted 8-year-old
kitty, Molly, after losing their beloved cat of 20 years, Pandora. Molly lived
a love-filled life in a home with two big dogs, for eight years. Her ‘Mom’
doted on her – but, over time, the allergy issue made it impossible for Mom to
hold or pet Molly. With great regret, Molly’s Mom sent a note out via Facebook
asking for help. Yvonne and family adopted Molly with open arms.

“It’s
hard to understand how anyone cannot love animals, as we do. It’s hard to
understand why cats languish in shelters – when we know many are just like
Molly; loving, caring, warm, and full of life,” Yvonne says. “The purrs alone
help bring our blood pressure down and convince us that we are lucky to have a
girl like Molly at our house. “

Anyone
can be a hero and red capes are not needed (unless of course, it makes you feel
good).
